March 26th through April 8th, 2022
We really like our stays at John Martin Reservoir, so we'll end up here most years during our travels. It's a good stop over between Texas and Colorado, where we live and where we're from. And it's just a nice area, and we always find it to be very relaxing.
This time, we had one of the spots right on Lake Hasty. We pulled in instead of backing in, so our power cable ran under the coach to the other side. But it meant our big, front window opened to the water. It was perfect, though we were under trees and the spiders were out of control. Lesson learned on trees in the spring.
We did a 360-degree video of the reservoir the last time we were at John Martin, so we didn't get one this time. We just enjoyed the water. As always, it was fantastic.
One of the highlights of the trip was a day of riding our new electric bikes, our Juiced Bikes Hyperscorpions (Margot's is blue, and Monica's is silver). We got them when we were in the Dallas area, but either the weather was bad or there was nowhere to ride them, so we hadn't gotten out much. We had our first good day on them at John Martin, and we rode all over the place. There are dirt trails around the campground as well as paved roads, and there isn't much traffic on the roads. We even went over the dam.
We've been focusing on seeing the country since going full time in our RV, and that means seeing national parks as well as cool towns and big lakes. We saw a couple places while we were there, including Bent's Old Fort. It's a really cool place that they've rebuilt, and we learned a lot about the area from the volunteers there.
We also went to the site of the Sand Creek Massacre. The park ranger gave us a long talk as an overview of the history of the area, which was very special to us. We walked around, and it was very sobering and sad. It has stuck with us -- it was very sad, but we were glad we went.
It was a whirlwind and we saw a lot, but it was a really good stay. We left after a couple weeks and headed up to the Denver area to reconnect with everyone. We were happy to be back in Colorado!
