We were staying at the KOA in Monument Valley, and the campground also rented Jeeps. We decided to rent a Jeep, and other friends from TrailDamage.com were coming out from Colorado to join us on some trails in the area.
We had our rental Jeep for the first three days of offroad adventures, and we used the car (our Lexus RX 450h) on the fourth day:
- Day 1: Blue Notch Canyon
- Day 2: Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, River House
- Day 3: Snow Flat Road, Bullet Canyon, Muley Point, Cedar Mesa
- Day 4: Valley of the Gods
Those links, above, also showcase some great videos (including 360-degree videos) so you can really look around. It was an amazing time with friends.
Monica drove on Day 1, and then Margot drove the Jeep and car the other three days. Margot loves driving a Jeep on trails now, too! Monica has a big Jeep back in Colorado, but she's selling it. We're just not there enough to be able to use it enough. It used to be a pretty big part of her life, so it's a melancholy end of an era.
On our way back to Monument Valley after doing Valley of the Gods, we stopped by Goosenecks State Park. It's basically a parking lot where you can look down onto a big bend in the river. That was pretty cool.
We also drove out to Navajo National Monument. It was a long way, but it was a gorgeous drive. There wasn't much of a visitor center, but there was a hike down a long hill to an overlook. You could just barely see Ancestral Puebloan structures in the canyon wall across and below the overlook, lost in the late afternoon shadows. Then we had a long walk up the hill. It was great exercise, but we weren't sure we'd visit that national monument again.
Renting a Jeep and seeing more of the country was a great idea, and we'd definitely do it again!
