Around Las Vegas

Around Las Vegas

December 8-10, 2022

It felt like we'd never run out of things to do during our stay in Boulder City, Nevada. We had already spent time on Lake Mead and in the view we had out our front window. There was a lot to explore in that water, and we hadn't even seen all of it. The Colorado River builds up Lake Mead on one side of the Hoover Dam, and the river continues past it, making wide spots here and there that are great for boating. The next spot south of the Hoover Dam was Lake Mohave.

Margot did that Lake on her own, with Lacey. She put the boat in at Willow Beach, and the video goes to Cottonwood Cove where she was hoping to buy gas, but everything was locked. She managed to make it back to Willow Beach with a little gas to spare.

Margot camped in the area many years ago, and she had fond memories of that part of the river.

We were still trying to see as many national parks as we could, and the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument was on the other side of Vegas. We had read that it was an undeveloped park, but we wanted to check it out anyway. We probably could have skipped this one.

It was a windy, chilly day. We parked at one side of the park and got out to walk Lacey. There were some undeveloped, unmarked, dirt trails here and there. We followed one through a hole in the side of a low bluff and walked around a little. There was nothing to see but dirt, really. There is no visitor center -- only a small kiosk. This could be a cool park someday, but for now it isn't much.

We were on the far side of Las Vegas, and we decided to check out the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. It was a huge area, with a nice visitor center. It was still pretty chilly, so we decided not to do any of the exposed hikes.

We'll be staying in Las Vegas in the winter of 2023, and there is still more to see. It's a great place to stay.
